Set HR up, step by step
Five things have to exist before anybody can request a day off. This is the order they depend on each other in.
Open HR settings
People → HR settings. Until the five pieces below exist, the page says so at the top: nothing is set up yet, so nobody can request time off. Walk me through it opens them in order, each one landing where the work is actually done and coming straight back.
Nothing there is required to leave the page. Whatever is left over keeps showing until it is done.
1. Public holidays
The days you are closed
A holiday calendar is the list of days your company is closed, and those days are never counted against anybody's allowance. WizzHire ships no list of its own, because the right dates depend on where you operate: paste your own, or copy last year's calendar into this year.
One calendar is enough for most companies. Add another when a site keeps its own dates, then set that calendar on the people it applies to. Everybody else follows the default.
2. Kinds of leave, and what each is worth
A kind of leave and its allowance are one thing here, not two
Add the usual three creates annual, sick and unpaid leave for you to rename. Add my own starts from an empty one. Each type carries its name and colour, its allowance, when the days arrive, what survives 31 December, and its booking rules.
3. The working week
Which days count as work when leave is measured
This is the company default, and it is the one place a wrong answer quietly costs people days. Anybody who works differently is set on their own record instead, and leave is only ever charged for the days that person works.
4. Your people
Balances are created per person, so nothing lands until they exist
If your colleagues already log into the workspace, the directory says so at the top and offers to turn each of them into a record connected to the account they log in with. That is the fastest way in. Otherwise import your workforce from a spreadsheet, or add people one at a time.
Import your employeesAdd an employee record5. Who approves
One rule, for every kind of leave
There are three answers, and you pick one:
- Their own manager decides: the request goes to whoever is above them on their record. Anybody away on leave is skipped, and when nobody above them can decide it lands with the company owner.
- Their manager, then a fallback: the same, except that when nobody above them can decide it goes to the people you pick rather than to the owner.
- The same people decide, always: every request from everybody goes to the people you pick, whatever the reporting line says.
Turn on Let the line above step in and somebody further up can decide a request their manager has not answered, and can reverse a decision until the leave starts. Underneath the rule, the page walks one request through end to end, so you can read what you have chosen before you save it.
You are done when the counter reads 5 of 5
From then on a person can send a request, their balance moves the moment they do, and the approver sees it waiting. The rest of the module, work time, shifts, onboarding and reports, does not depend on any of this and can wait until you get to it.
