Departments and the org chart
Sort people into teams, set who reports to whom, and print the chart that comes out of it.
Departments
People → Employees → Manage departments. A department is just a name people are sorted into, so add them as you need them. Importing a workforce can create them for you from the names in the file.
Renaming one changes it everywhere at once. Deleting one that still has people asks which department they move to first, so nobody is left unsorted.
- Move several people at once: select rows in the directory, then Set department. The move is confirmed before it runs and can be undone straight after.
- Filter by department: the directory filters by department, status, contract type, and free text, and the filters combine.
Managers make the chart
There is no separate place to draw an org chart. Set a manager on each employee record and the chart builds itself from those lines.
- Nobody above and nobody below: that person is not connected to the chart yet, and the chart says how many are in that state.
- Reporting to somebody who left: flagged as a terminated manager. Assign a new one on their record.
Reading the chart
The directory has three views: table, cards and org chart. In the chart you can expand and collapse a team, zoom, and fit the whole thing to the width of the screen.
- Simplified: everybody who manages somebody keeps their own box, and their reports become rows inside it. That is what makes a large company readable at once.
- Card fields: which lines appear on each box is a company setting, and the same choice is used on screen and on the printed page.
Printing it
Export turns the chart into one PDF at the paper size you choose, from A4 to A0, portrait or landscape. It tells you the text size that comes out, and says so when it drops below what anybody can read without leaning in.
If your printer only takes A4, the poster is split across several sheets that line up into the full chart, each labelled in the corner.
A chart is only as good as the records under it
Everything on it comes from the employee records: the name, the position, the department, the line. Fix it there and the chart, the access it grants, and the approvals it routes all move together.
